RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

  • Researcher, Colorado State University, U.S.A., 1993 - 1998.
  • Studied the theory and operated different types of Geographical Information System (GIS) programs, both raster and vector based such as IDRISI, ARCINFO and MAPINFO.
  • Studied the theory and operated various types of Global Positioning System (GPS) programs and GPS receivers both in autonomous and differential correction modes.
  • Developed knowledge and explored the uses of GIS and GPS in many applications, such as generation of georeferenced digital (electronic) maps, environment protection, surveying and remote sensing, with a great emphasis on their applications in precision farming.
  • An extensive field study was conducted to implement the precision farming technique, where soil samples from an agricultural field were collected and analyzed to determine the appropriate herbicide application rate for different field locations.
  • Utilized a GIS program and GPS technology to develop a digitized GIS map of the studied field; the map was used as a herbicide application rate management map.
  • Used a real-time differentially corrected GPS system to locate a ground sprayer in the field and precisely determine its position coordinates (latitude and longitude).
  • Integrated the knowledge of GIS and GPS into the development of a GPS and GIS-based spatially variable rate herbicide application system. The developed system was capable of automatically changing, on-the-go, the amount of chemicals to fit the requirements of current sprayer field location in the study field in order to reduce environment contamination and farming cost. The system was tested in the field and proven to be effective and efficient.
  • Research Assistant, Colorado State University, U.S.A., 1989-1992.
  • Studied and operated various data collecting systems.
  • Studied and calibrated different types of monitoring sensors.
  • Conducted a field study to reveal the accuracy of a commercial control system in providing a constant application rate of agricultural chemicals at different ground speeds of a field chemical sprayer.
  • Conducted extensive field experiments to monitor the behavior of a ground field sprayer with and without a control system.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Proficiency in GIS and GPS systems. This includes developing digitized GIS maps, location determination using satellite signals, remote sensing, surveying, and managing spatially - variable data.
  • Knowledge in agricultural chemicals and their safety procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of site-specific (precision) farming and different techniques of applying it, such as the implementation of GIS and GPS technologies.
  • Knowledge in field data acquisition devices and data analysis.
  • Experience in designing and performing different tests and experiments both in the lab and out in the field.
